Come and celebrate the 101st International Women’s Day – a global event in honour of the lives and achievements of women.
Where?
Festivities will take place at Swansea’s National Waterfront Museum on Thursday 8 March between 11am and 3pm. Women of all ages and walks of life are welcome to drop in free of charge to browse the stalls and goods on display, meet other women and learn more about the way people from all over the world commemorate this annual occasion. There will be a wide variety of stalls ranging from women’s organisations such as Women’s Aid, the Minority Ethnic Women’s Network, Soroptimist International and Platform 51 (formerly the YWCA) to crafts, gifts and jewellery.
The first International Women’s Day in 1911 saw over a million men and women campaign for women’s rights to vote, be paid equally and to live without discrimination. Over the last 100 years, it has grown significantly to become a worldwide event focusing on the positive aspects of womanhood and is now a national holiday in 27 countries from Afghanistan to Zambia, but not yet in Wales!
The event is being organised by Chwarae Teg with support and thanks to the Waterfront Museum for providing the venue. This year’s celebration coincides with Chwarae Teg’s twentieth anniversary of championing women in Wales. We hope to see you there – girls, women, mothers, grandmothers, family members – all welcome!
