Betty has always been passionate about multicultural education and fair play and believes that if you want to achieve success in any arena, you must have the determination and will to succeed, allied by the support of a good team.

Betty has faced prejudice throughout her life and has overcome many obstacles in relation to some of the views held by others, be it education departments or politicians. As a result of setting herself goals and taking positive action to achieve them, she eventually succeeded in her campaign to become headmistress of Mount Stuart School in Cardiff Bay.

It was Betty’s aim to reach new heights in multicultural education for the school and for the children to reach their full potential by making them see the good in people of all cultures. She raised money by organising dances to buy books and was prepared to use unorthodox measures to get results, travelling the world to bring books back and even producing books of her own.

As well as receiving an MBE in 1986 for her contribution to community work and education, Betty is an honorary fellow of University of Wales Institute Cardiff. The fellowship is awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves and made a significant contribution to their field.

Betty is actively involved in with Butetown Education Arts and Training Centre and is a charity fundraiser for Butetown Community Action.

She demonstrates that with determination, honesty and passion you can achieve your goals.
