We currently have a vacancy for a Commercial Director to lead our FairPlay Employer project.

This role holds a key position within Chwarae Teg, with strategic oversight and operational accountability for FairPlay Employer’s commercial activity.

The role focuses on:

  • embedding the commercial growth strategy
  • ensuring the commercial goals are delivered
  • growing income and developing new products
  • identifying and growing the capability required to ensure the long-term sustainability of FairPlay Employer.

We are seeking an influential and diligent leader with experience of strategic planning, stakeholder management, developing commercial relationships and overseeing operational delivery to meet agreed targets, budgets, and client expectations.

Remote Working

All roles within Chwarae Teg are home-based and facilitated by the provision of a company laptop and mobile phone to be used for work purposes. We expect this role to predominantly be carried out virtually, however the role will also involve some travel and collaborative teamwork.

Context

Chwarae Teg is the charity inspiring, leading and delivering gender equality in Wales. Since 1992 we have been working to ensure that women in Wales can enter the workplace, develop their skills and build rewarding careers. Our vision is for a fairer Wales where all women achieve and prosper. Our projects and activities contribute to this vision by supporting individuals, employers, people and organisations with influence, to behave in a way that enables women to achieve their goals focussed in three areas:

FairPlay Employer was established in 2018 to assist Chwarae Teg’s goal to become more self-sufficient following the change to funding sources and opportunities. FairPlay Trading Ltd was set up in April 2020, supporting the organisation to diversify its income streams, going further to achieve this objective, widening the scope of the work we can deliver to clients while maintaining our core mission and values. All profits from FairPlay Trading Ltd are reinvested into the charity to support its charitable objectives.

Purpose of the role:

The Commercial Director holds a key strategic position within Chwarae Teg, with strategic oversight and operational accountability for FairPlay Employer’s commercial activity. The role focuses on embedding the commercial growth strategy, growing income (and surplus raising activities), and identifying and growing the capability required (people and organisational) to ensure long-term sustainability of FairPlay Employer.

The Role

Specifically, the Commercial Director will:

  • Control, direct and manage an ambitious commercial strategy and commercial development for Charity based on the commercial intent of Chwarae Teg
  • Defining and implementing a clear commercial strategy and a robust commercial plan to shape and deliver the agreed annual budgets
  • Reporting to the Chwarae Teg and FairPlay Trading Board of Trustees on the progress and continued development of the Commercial Strategy and plan.
  • Setting the annual budgets and targets for FairPlay Trading and reporting on these continuously to SLT and the Boards, as well as maintaining pipeline forecasting reports.
  • Develop and implement new income streams aligned to the commercial strategy
  • Effectively lead and develop the commercial team to ensure they deliver agreed budgets and meet client expectations
  • Representing the organisation in negotiations with key strategic customers; establishing and maintaining effective formal and informal links with customers, relevant key decision makers and other stakeholders
  • Be the primary point of contact for all commercial related activities
  • Work with communications and marketing to create the commercial narrative for internal and external audiences
  • Work in collaboration with other departments where required to implement the commercial strategy
  • Be an active participant of the senior leadership team
  • Support the CEO and senior leadership team in creating a culture of commercial understanding across Chwarae Teg.

Strategic Development

  • Control, direct and manage our commercial strategy, ensuring we have a clear and deliverable plan to maximise income, surplus and client satisfaction.
  • Play an active role in the broader remit of the senior leadership team, understanding and contributing to the overall Chwarae Teg goals.
  • Develop new income streams aligned to the overall commercial strategy.

Stakeholder Management – internal and external

  • Work with other departments to ensure the successful delivery of the commercial strategy e.g. Marketing, Policy and Research.
  • Build strong internal relationships to be able to collaborate and influence.
  • Build extensive external networks with private and public sector organisations and umbrella bodies to facilitate business development.

Client

  • Overall responsibility for creating, developing and managing successful external commercial relationships.
  • Ensure the delivery of excellent products and services to meet client expectations.
  • Create a client centric organisation and process, utilising technology where possible to create a smooth client journey.

Operational Delivery

  • Lead and develop the commercial team to deliver all agreed targets and budgets – business development, account management and delivery.
  • Attend and speak at events (including evenings and weekends) to build networks and brand awareness.
  • Monitor the external environment and competitor activity to anticipate any issues and take steps to mitigate any financial impact.
  • Deputise for the Chief Executive at appropriate events, presentations and meetings.

Person Specification

To carry out this role effectively, it is essential that the post holder:

  • Has a relevant degree, professional qualification or experience
  • Proven track record of success in a senior level; general, or commercial, management role
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and implementing commercial best practices, that maximize profitable revenue and deliver attractive margins
  • Commercially astute, articulate, technically strong, dynamic, insightful and influential leader with the ability to operate at both a strategic and an operational level
  • Prepare plans, budgets and progress reports. Develop goals, objectives and priorities and assign to the team.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, an ability to build effective commercial relationships with external stakeholders at a senior leadership/board level.
  • Ability to collaborate, build relationships and influence internal stakeholders.
  • A passion for driving commerciality through the organisation to continue the cultural shift to a more self-funded charity model.
  • Understands the relationship between and implications of the development of a commercial trading arm within a charity.
  • Produce business narrative and conduct market analysis including Identifying gaps, risks and issue resolution
  • Keep abreast of market and industry trends, customer strategies and competitors activity
  • Identify unexpressed customer needs and potential products and/or services to meet those needs
  • Experience of effectively using a CRM system to manage, report and optimise the sales process, utilising data analysis for continuous improvement, strategy and product evolution.
  • Has a network of senior contacts within private and public sector in Wales.
  • Commitment to the vision and mission of Chwarae Teg.

Desirable:

  • The ability to communicate in Welsh would be an advantage.
