Chwarae Teg hosts event with Toyota Deeside – 28th November

Careers in engineering, science and the digital sector are not just for boys - that will be the message at an alternative careers event for girls to be hosted at the Toyota plant in Deeside at the end of November. Wales’ leading gender equality charity, Chwarae Teg will be joining together with Toyota to present Not Just for Boys: the alternative careers fair for women and girls on 28th November. The aim of the Not Just for Boys event is to give girls the opportunity to consider careers that might not be traditionally thought of as options for women. The event aims to attract girls from years 7-13 from local schools.

In the recent Bright! Report carried out by Chwarae Teg exploring young women’s career aspirations, 87% of the survey participants felt that gender stereotypes continued to affect young women’s careers.Women are still favouring traditionally female dominated sectors, despite the need for more women in sectors such as manufacturing which can offer higher salaries.

Emma Tamplin from Chwarae Teg said:

“We at Chwarae Teg want to show girls that they should never feel that their ambition should be limited by their gender, and we’re delighted to be working with a high profile, global company like Toyota to spread this message. Not Just for Boys gives girls an opportunity to find out more about different career options across a variety of industries and sectors before they set about choosing their GCSE subjects. The girls will have a chance to meet role models from the different sectors and to try their hands at engineering, digital and other skills that they might never have tried before.
“Current surveys indicate that only 11% of the UK’s engineering workforce is female and that the UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe. This event at the Toyota plant in Deeside, a really important local employer, will show girls that they too can aspire to a career in engineering or other non-traditional sectors.”

Natalie Morris from Toyota said:

“We’re really excited to be hosting Not Just for Boys in partnership with Chwarae Teg. It promises to be a fantastic event with some amazing people and organisations taking part on the day. We’re really looking forward to playing our part in inspiring young women from the local area to achieve their dreams and prosper in their careers.”
