The Near Ready Leadership, Public Leaders of the Future, Board Induction Training and Diversity & Equality Training Programmes have been designed following the Ministerial objective to, ’Increase diversity on public body boards’; aligned with the strategy set out in ‘Reflecting and Running Wales - Diversity & Inclusion Strategy for Public Appointments in Wales’.

The Goal was to create a robust pipeline of potential board members, ensuring that individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds and disabled people of high calibre, expertise and skills, who are near ready to apply can participate in a high-level leadership programme for Board development.

There are four different training programmes available depending on individual requirements:

‘Near Ready’ Leadership Programme: Individuals who will complete these programmes will already have some leadership experience, such as being a school governor, and will be interested in obtaining a Board position on a Public Body in Wales. The programme is intended to provide delegates with the specialist knowledge and skills to execute the responsibilities of a board member on a regulated public body in Wales.

Public Leaders of the Future: For disabled people and people from ethnic minority communities who are interested in obtaining a public appointment but who do not yet have the necessary skills and experience to apply. The training will provide participants with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed to move towards obtaining a board position on a public body and help to develop a pipeline of diverse talent.

Board Member Introduction Training: Suite of training which will provide introduction training for new board members of non-health Bodies. The training will equip new appointees to the boards of regulated public bodies in Wales with the key information needed to carry out their role.

Introduction to D&I Training: Suite of training which will provide Diversity & Inclusion training for Chairs and Board members of public bodies in Wales. The training, offered to the boards of 55 regulated public bodies in Wales, will provide delegates with an understanding of equalities legislation, the Social Model of Disability, reasonable adjustments, systemic/institutional racism and racial inequality training.

With the aim of increasing representation on Public Boards, the Welsh Government are running two Near Ready Leadership Programmes in 2023 aimed specifically at leaders in Wales who are:

  • Disabled People
  • Individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds

The programmes aim to equip leaders with the specialist knowledge and skills to carry out the role of a Board Member on a Public Body.

The programme aims to provide participants with:

  • An understanding of the dynamics and logistics of a Board.
  • A greater understanding of the work of Public Bodies in Wales.
  • The ability to identify and utilise their tangible skills to obtain and succeed in a Board position.

The course will start in July and October. Course dates to be determined.

The scoring criteria for the Near Ready Leadership Programme is outlined below. When completing your application form please pay close attention to the criteria to ensure you demonstrate your experiences and goals.

What are you hoping to achieve from the programme? Looking to secure a role in public board. Increase knowledge and skillset to support board application. Bridging the knowledge gap to be ready to apply for board position.
Existing Leadership experience. 12 months plus leadership experience. Preferably senior leadership experience (near ready experience) tangible skills identified that will support anear ready position.
Experience as a Board Member or Public Appointment Previous experience in voluntary board roles, governor positions or public appointment roles.
When are you looking to apply for a Board position? The goal of the programme is to build a robust pipeline of the future talent for public boards in Wales. Those in a position and looking to apply more quickly will achieve a higher score.

Start your journey today to gain a greater understanding of the role of a committee/board member of a Public Body and learn how you can utilise your tangible skills to influence and guide public services in Wales.

The programme aims to provide participants with:

  • An understanding of Public appointments in Wales and the logistics and dynamics of Board meetings.
  • An opportunity to be matched with a mentor and or/shadow a Public Appointee.
  • Practical help and guidance on how to apply for a public appointment and other roles, and how to prepare for an interview.
  • An understanding of how to influence and challenge others appropriately.

The course will start in July and October. Course dates to be determined.

Board Member Introduction Training

Board Member Introduction Training funded by Welsh Government and delivered by FairPlay Employer has been designed following the Ministerial objective to increase diversity on Public Body Boards, aligned with the strategy set out in ‘Reflecting and Running Wales - Diversity & Inclusion Strategy for Public Appointments in Wales’.

The training will equip new appointees to the boards of regulated public bodies in Wales with the key information needed to carry out their role.

The programme aims to provide participants with:

  • An understanding of Public bodies in Wales and the logistics and dynamics of Board meetings.
  • An understanding of the code of conduct for Board members.
  • Practical guidance on how to be a better ally and advocate for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion on a Board.
  • An understanding of how to influence and challenge others appropriately.

Spaces are limited to 20 participants per programme and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

The programme will be delivered over 6 virtual sessions delivered across 6 weeks per programme.

The only requirement for attending the programme is that you have been serving on a non-health, public body board for 12 months or less.

Diversity and Inclusion Training for Public Body Board Members

Diversity and Inclusion training funded by Welsh Government and delivered by FairPlay Employer has been designed following the Ministerial objective to increase diversity on Public Body Boards, aligned with the strategy set out in ‘Reflecting and Running Wales - Diversity & Inclusion Strategy for Public Appointments in Wales’.

The training will provide existing Public Body Board Members and Chairs with an understanding of equalities legislation, the Social Model of Disability, reasonable adjustments, systemic/institutional racism and racial inequality training.

The programme aims to provide participants with:

  • Ability to recognise their role in developing and driving inclusive practice.
  • An understanding of Equalities legislation and systemic inequalities within workplace practice.
  • Practical guidance on how to be a better ally and advocate for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion on a Board.

Spaces are limited to 40 participants per programme, spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

The training will be delivered virtually through 4 sessions taking place over 3 days.

The only requirement for attending the programme is that you are currently serving on a public body board in Wales.
