Rising to the challenge of a growing baking business

26th November 2021
A business with great baking ambitions has been recognised for its outstanding growth and dedication to staff progression and development.

Founded and run by wife and husband Chloe and Oliver Davies, Get Caked Bake House has been awarded prestigious ‘Achieving FairPlay Employer’ status by Chwarae Teg which runs the Agile Nation2 Business Programme.

The couple, who are self- taught bakers, have been working with Chwarae Teg whilst rapidly expanding their company against the odds during a global pandemic. Less than a year ago Get Caked had one base in Swansea and 8 staff, but now has over 30 staff and a staggering further 4 bases - in Llanelli, Cardiff, Bridgend and Bristol, with stockists of their bakes and cakes across south Wales and a roaring online trade. People local to those areas are very likely to have spotted their distinctive shop bases which are beautifully transformed horseboxes!

We had, and still have, rapid growth plans but wanted to make sure our staff were able to share in our success and come along for the ride. Through the business programme, run by Chwarae Teg, we have been able to access invaluable training, development and coaching opportunities. It’s meant that we have kept us up to speed with modern and agile ways of working, which put staff at the centre of our culture. Through years of practice, what started out as a relaxing hobby, our baking has grown into something unimaginable.

Chloe Davies
Owner, Get Caked

We have implemented some new policies, training and practices that will support our rapid business growth and ensure we attract a diverse range of candidates and are an inclusive employer. Although the Get Caked team is constantly growing our team values remain the same with passion, fun and creativity at the heart of all our staff.

Owner, Get Caked

Get Caked Bake House have worked hard to get structures and systems in place, whilst undergoing phenomenal growth. Their success in gaining the ‘Achieving’ FairPlay Employer Award is testament to their work ethic and their commitment to equality and diversity. We are continuing to work together so that the business can further benefit from the services we offer at Chwarae Teg including a fully funded career development programme for women staff who are looking to progress at work.”
